The European Union is funding through the Marco Polo programme new transport services which shift freight from Europe’s congested roads onto rail, short-sea shipping routes and inland waterways, or which avoid road transport. The available budget for the 2012 Call is €64.6 million.

Special environmentally-friendly maritime projects, inland waterway projects and rail projects with single-wagon loads are priorities in 2012.

The Call for the Marco Polo project proposals has been published on 20 June 2012 and the applications have to be submitted before the deadline. The deadline has been extended: the new date is 19 October 2012 (instead of 21 September 2012).
